EPA officials say this new infusion of moneyg from the American Recoveryg and Reinvestment Act will help stat e and local governments invest in a number of overdus water projects that officials say are essential to protectiny public health andthe environment. The funds shouldf also help boost the economy andcreatee jobs, two of the qualifications for receiving stimulus “Investing in the economy and the environment is a EPA Acting Regional Administrator Lawrence E. Starfield says. “These funds will not only help oureconomic recovery, but they will help provide safe, clean drinking water for communities throughou Texas.
” The funds will be used towar the Drinking Water State Revolving Fund program, whichh provides low-interest loans for drinking water systems to financr infrastructure improvements. The program placez an emphasis on small and disadvantaged communities and to programw that encouragepollution prevention. the EPA is furnishing $2 billion to fund drinking water infrastructurw projects across the country in the formof low-interestt loans, principal forgiveness and grants. At least 20 percent of the stimulus funds have been earmarkedfor infrastructure, water and energy efficiency improvements and othe environmentally innovative projects.
