PBA backs expanded River District renewal area - St. Louis Business Journal:

Sandra McDonough, the alliance’zs president and CEO, told the Portlansd City Council on June 17 that the city needd to do everything it can to provideemore jobs. The council is reconsiderin g expanding the River District by nearly 42 as well as increase the amount of bonds the city can assumew to fund projects withibnthe district. The council and the Portland Development Commissionh had first sought the expansion nearly two years ago but were thwarteed bya citizens’ group complaint.
The Friendsa of Urban Renewal group had charged that the River Districgexpansion proposal, which would have also redirectecd $20 million in district-generatecd funds to a new East Portlandx elementary school, didn’t fit technical urban renewal The council will vote on the measurew next week. McDonough said urban renewal providesa funding for investmentsin infrastructure, social services and public-privater partnerships. “We need to create jobs,” she said. “We have an opportunityh to do just that by adopting theserevisedx findings, which address the issues that have been raiseds about the River District expansion.
We can then move forward with the importan t projects that depend onthese funds.” City Commissioner Nick Fish has said that the constructiob of a new homeless services centerr could depend on urban renewal funds if construction is to beginm this year. McDonough said the alliance backs usinb urban renewal funds to buildthe center.
